If your laptop is booting up with nothing displayed on the LCD screen or if the screen is perhaps shattered, there is still hope. Repairing a broken laptop screen is easier than you might think. A shattered laptop display obviously needs a replacement screen. A couple of things you may want to check when there is no picture are the laptops brightness level and whether or not the picture shows up when connected to an external monitor. The brightness level is usually adjusted by a keyboard key combination, dedicated buttons or from the BIOS. If the laptop displays video on a connected external monitor then most likely the LCD or a component of the LCD is probably dead or malfunctioning. So where should you source the parts? eBay is probably your best option when it comes to laptop parts.

One of the easiest display replacement options is to find a complete laptop lid that includes a working LCD screen. With this option you would remove your laptops lid by popping out the plastic hinge cover or covers, removing the hinge screws, disconnecting the video cable from the motherboard and in some cases the built-in wireless card antenna wire. Your replacement lid would re-attach in reverse order. The other option would be to replace only the LCD screen with the lid. This option is a bit more involved and requires dismantling of the lids LCD screen housing components.

It usually requires removing the rubber feet or stickers that cover the plastic frame screw holes, then removing the screws and eventually the plastic framing that houses the LCD screen. If you are unsure about dismantling your laptop most of the major laptop manufacturers make available to the public usually through website download, the service manuals that detail with diagrams how to dismantle their laptops for servicing.
As with any eBay purchase, be sure to read the details of the listing and ensure that the make and model of your laptop matches what the seller is selling. For most newer laptops, manufacturers should have parts available if you are looking for an alternative to eBay but expect to pay premium prices.
